In aviation, time on the ground is time lost. Every minute an aircraft sits idle between arrival and departure represents cost — crew duty time, slot risk, delayed passengers, and unrealised revenue. Turnaround management is the discipline of orchestrating every ground event between an aircraft’s arrival and its next departure, so that the aircraft departs on time, every time.

Defining Aircraft Turnaround

A turnaround is the complete ground sequence from aircraft arrival to aircraft departure. Everything that happens in between — unloading, servicing, loading, fuelling, crew change, documentation, cleaning — is part of the turnaround.

A typical turnaround for a mid-size private jet at an Indian airport involves:

  1. Aircraft parks at assigned bay — chocks in, GPU connected (typically 5 minutes)
  2. Crew disembarks; cabin crew prepares for passenger disembarkation
  3. Passengers disembark via stairs or jetbridge
  4. Catering offloaded (waste food) and new catering loaded
  5. Aircraft cleaning (cabin, galley, lavatory)
  6. Baggage offloaded (arriving) and departing baggage loaded
  7. Fuel uplift — tanker connects, fuels to ordered quantity
  8. Aircraft tech log checked and serviced
  9. Documentation for next flight prepared: load sheet, flight plan, permits
  10. Passengers board for the next departure
  11. Pre-departure checks completed by crew
  12. Pushback / engine start / taxi to runway

What Is Minimum Turnaround Time (MTT)?

Minimum Ground Time (MGT) or Minimum Turnaround Time is the shortest possible time in which an aircraft can be safely serviced and readied for the next departure. It varies by:

  • Aircraft type and size
  • Fuel quantity required
  • Cleaning requirement (fresh cabin vs. quick clean)
  • Passenger numbers
  • Customs/immigration checks required

For private jets at major Indian airports, realistic minimum turnaround times are:

Aircraft Category Estimated MTT (no pax change) With pax change & customs
Light jet (Phenom 300, CJ series) 30-45 min 60-75 min
Mid-size jet (Hawker, Citation XLS) 45-60 min 75-90 min
Large jet (Global, G550/G650) 60-75 min 90-120 min
Ultra-long range (G700, Falcon 8X) 75-90 min 120-150 min

These are planning figures only — actual times depend on Indian airport conditions, customs processing, and service vendor responsiveness.

What Does Turnaround Management Include?

Aileron Air’s Turnaround Management service provides:

Pre-arrival planning. The turnaround sequence is planned before the aircraft lands. The fuel order is pre-placed, catering is coordinated, cleaning crew is pre-positioned, and customs/immigration is notified of arrival.

Real-time supervision. A supervisor is on the ramp from aircraft arrival. Every service vendor — fuelling, catering, cleaning, ground power — is managed against a pre-agreed turnaround timeline.

Coordination with crew. The supervisor provides the crew with a ground time target, keeps them informed of progress, and escalates if any service is running late.

Documentation management. Load sheet, fuel receipt, permits for the next sector, NOTAM brief for crew — all prepared and delivered to the aircraft before boarding.

Departure management. Crew boarding, final baggage check, ATC departure clearance slot — all coordinated for an on-time push.

Why Turnaround Management Matters in India

India’s airports have unique turnaround challenges:

Multiple authority clearances. Customs inspection, BCAS security check, and immigration clearance all have to be sequenced and tracked. A delay in any one holds the whole turnaround.

Service vendor responsiveness. Fuelling vehicles, catering carts, and cleaning crews at busy airports like VIDP and VABB have multiple aircraft to service. Your aircraft needs a supervisor to keep your services moving up the queue.

Crew duty time sensitivity. Under DGCA and international flight time limitation rules, crew cannot wait indefinitely on the ground. A delayed turnaround that pushes crew beyond their allowable duty time can ground a flight entirely. See our guide on Crew Rest Requirements in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is responsible for turnaround management at Indian airports?

A: The primary responsibility rests with the handling agent appointed by the operator. At airports where Aileron Air is the appointed handler, our supervisor owns the turnaround timeline from arrival to departure.

Q: Can turnaround times be negotiated with airports?

A: Minimum turnaround times are largely determined by physical constraints — you cannot fuel faster than the tanker pump delivers, and you cannot rush an immigration officer. However, pre-coordination and early notification consistently deliver shorter actual turnaround times than last-minute arrangements.

Q: What happens if a turnaround overruns the planned time?

A: The flight supervisor immediately notifies ATC of the revised departure time, requests a slot update, and works to compress the remaining ground tasks. If crew duty time is approaching a limit, this escalates to Aileron Air’s emergency management team.
