Crew fatigue is one of the leading risk factors in aviation safety. That is why international aviation frameworks — ICAO Annex 6, EU OPS, FAA FARs — all include strict flight time limitations and crew rest requirements. India’s DGCA has its own specific rules under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR).

This guide explains the key crew rest and duty time rules that apply to operations in India, so operators and trip planners can build legal and safe crew scheduling into every India programme.

Applicable Regulations in India

The primary regulatory framework for crew duty time and rest in India is:

  • CAR Section 7, Series B, Part I — Flight Time Limitations for Non-Scheduled Operators
  • CAR Section 7, Series B, Part II — Flight Time Limitations for Scheduled Operators
  • ICAO Annex 6 — Operation of Aircraft (the international baseline that DGCA aligns with)

For foreign operators flying into India, the crew rest standards of their home state’s regulations also apply (e.g., EU OPS for European operators, FAR Part 135 for US operators). Operators must comply with whichever standard is more restrictive.

Key Definitions

Flight Duty Period (FDP): The total time from crew reporting for duty until the aircraft is parked after the last flight of that duty period.

Rest Period: The time between the end of one FDP and the commencement of the next. Must be taken in an appropriate rest facility (hotel or similar).

Flight Time: The time from aircraft first movement until it comes to rest after landing.

Cumulative Limits: Maximum hours over rolling 28-day, 90-day, and 12-month periods.

DGCA Maximum Duty Periods (Non-Scheduled Operations)

Under DGCA CAR Section 7, Series B, for non-scheduled operations (which covers most private jet and charter operations):

Crew Configuration Maximum FDP
Single pilot 10 hours
Two pilots (multi-crew) 12 hours
Extended crew (augmented) Up to 16-18 hours depending on in-flight rest provisions

Note: These are maximum limits under ideal conditions. FDPs may be shorter depending on number of sectors flown, time of day, and acclimatisation factors.

Minimum Rest Requirements

After any FDP, the crew must receive a minimum rest period before the next FDP:

  • At least 10 consecutive hours (DGCA minimum for non-scheduled operations)
  • At least 8 hours of sleep opportunity within that rest period
  • Rest taken in a suitable accommodation (hotel of appropriate standard)

For international operations where crew cross time zones, additional acclimatisation rest may be required.

Why This Matters for India Trip Planning

Many India trips involve long transoceanic legs (from Europe, Middle East, or Americas) followed by multiple sectors within India. Getting crew rest right from the outset of the trip is critical:

  • A crew arriving from a 12-hour transatlantic flight cannot immediately begin multi-sector India operations without rest
  • Crew rest hotels must be booked near the airport (not in the city centre) to allow maximum sleep time within the rest period
  • Crew transport must be pre-organised so rest is not consumed by travel time

Aileron Air’s Crew Support & Services manages crew hotel booking, transportation, and scheduling so that rest periods are fully compliant — not just technically legal but practically restful.

Crew Fatigue Management Systems

Modern DGCA regulations increasingly align with ICAO’s Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) framework, which goes beyond simple FDP limits to manage crew fatigue scientifically. Under FRMS:

  • Operators identify fatigue risks specific to their routes
  • Fatigue monitoring tools (actigraphs, sleep diaries) may be used
  • Scientific evidence can support either extension or restriction of FDP limits beyond the basic rules

For operators with a FRMS-approved operations manual, this can provide operational flexibility on India routes. Consult your aviation regulatory advisor and Aileron Air’s operations team for programme-specific guidance.

Crew Rest During Ground Stops in India

For crew who layover in India between flights, Aileron Air coordinates:

  • Hotel accommodation close to the airport (VIDP, VABB, VOBL, and all major Indian airports)
  • Crew transport from aircraft to hotel and return
  • Meal arrangements during layover
  • Wake-up call and pre-departure transport scheduling
  • Crew briefing materials delivered to hotel

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a single-pilot private jet be exempted from rest requirements in India?

A: No. Crew rest requirements apply regardless of aircraft category or number of crew. Single-pilot operations face the most restrictive FDP limits precisely because there is no second pilot to share workload.

Q: What counts as a suitable rest facility in India?

A: DGCA expects accommodation that provides a quiet, dark, temperature-controlled environment for sleep. Airport hotels or four/five-star hotels close to the airport are the standard recommendation. Aileron Air books crew hotels that meet DGCA rest facility expectations.

Q: What happens if a crew exceeds their FDP due to a ground delay in India?

A: The flight cannot depart until the crew has taken the required rest. Aileron Air’s flight supervisor notifies the operator immediately when a delay risks approaching FDP limits, allowing time to arrange crew rest and reschedule the departure.
